Final Film

P5 Certification Classification Based on Feedback

Below are the graphs I was able to access for the total results of my questionnaire, which I designed in order to properly establish a correct age certification for my short film 'Here After Us'. the first question was about the age rating, and the others are about the performances of each section that I have edited to the short film. As a result, the questionnaire worked quite well and allowed me to see what people are thinking after watched.

I asked the first question about the certification of the film. It is a 100% U rate in 8 responses. The reasons behind can be seen from the answer on the last question. They think this is a drama type of short film and the mood is between sad and romance. This short film doesn't contain any violence, drugs, or bad languages like I said before. They gave a quite high rating for my editing skills though, however I think the short film can be improved by their comments.

Here is my draft letter to the BBFC:

My final film certification:

As you can see from the questionnaire, there is a 100% of respondent are rated it as 'U', ultimately I give my film a Universal certification. Below is a screenshot from the official BBFC website, which states that what are suitable and should have in U films.

P4 Focus Group Screening & Feedback

Meaning and Purpose:

It is vital by given the correct certification to the film, even this is only a private student coursework short film. Because this is actually against the law if not suitable rate the film by ages or without any consideration behind to classify. Therefore, there are an Organisations called the BBFC are required to note any dangerous of criminal activities on a DVD, and it usually appears at the beginning of the movie or any promotional activities including poster, advertisement, etc. A suitable certification gives a better idea to people of the movie basically is about.

The commercial implications of incorrect certification of films can be dangerous. Firstly it is illegal as I mentioned before. Secondly, if the movie contains violence, bad languages, drugs; and I rate it as U. This may affect a young child's psychological quality or their growths.

Below there is a focus group video that was recorded by my Media teacher during my media lesson time. So, what we did was we watched the product and they gave me feedback right after watched. It was really good to have their comments and advice on the product as they are all media students which mean that they are able to give me professional comments.

In the video of the focus group, I explained briefly about the storyline of the short film and giving explanations about the purpose of doing both languages subtitles. My focus group agrees that I rated my video as 'U' (any age group) because the video only has a tiny violence which is the scene of Marco grabbing Alex's shirt in the common room scene, there is also no strong languages as I put a sad romantic piano song as the background. They also think the size of the subtitles are alright which I think its a bit small, and Kent has mentioned that the Chinese subtitle is not necessary to have and rather to have a greater size of English subtitles. He also mentioned about the audio translations are not really good in the scene of Marco and Alex argue, and I have improved that after to this advice.

Furthermore, I have made a questionnaire, which related to my short film 'Here After Us'. There are questions and rating about the certification rating and editing skills. Personally, I do not think it should be rated other than 'U' as it doesn't contain any bad language or drugs. I hope people can give appropriate feedback on my questionnaire.

P3(d) Linking Audio to Visuals and Applying Audio Effects

Meaning & Purpose: In this area, I put screenshots to show the evidence of my work. It shows my timeline during the editing process which is showing both audio and video timeline. I will be going to discuss the steps in order to make the video export well.

P3(c) Applying Visual Effects and Transitions

Purpose and Meaning: In this section, I will explain clearly about the visual effect and transition that I have used in this short film - Here After Us. For visual effects, I have used mostly colour correction and contrast to make the better quality of the short film. I have also used 'Additive Dissolve' and 'Dip to Black' for the transition of the some of the clips and title text box.

This is the beginning of the short film, we used aerial photographing of some building to be the opening. We did this because we liked to make a movie trailer at first, but we found out that we filmed too much footage for a trailer, it was too detailed. Then we decided to change our topic into a short film.

These three screenshots are the timeline of my edition. As you can see, I named every footage, that helps me to have a well organise through the whole process. If you see there are some purple lines under the name of a clip, that are the evidence that I have used visual effects (Colour correction, Brightness & Contrast), Colour Balance HLS, transitions (Additive dissolve, Dip to Black). They are probably are all the effects that I have used for this short film. There are also three purple lines on the top of the clips; the first one is the 'Here After Us  2018/02/14' of the short film at the top, and the other two are the black banners of the top and bottom side of the short film.

These can be found at the left of the edition line, which is called Effect Controls.

I used this clip as an example. I put Brightness & Contrast as I think this clip is a bit bright at the back, maybe it is because the weather was sunny that day. I adjusted the brightness into -17.5, then I put contrast into -4.9 to balance the brightness that I have changed. I also put a transition 'Dip in Black' at the back of the clip as this is the end of the scene, this gives a meaning of ending of one scene to the audiences.

P3(b) Producing and Reviewing an Off Line Edit

Meaning & Purpose: In this area, I am going to explain how my edition begins by following my plans. I will also put some screenshots to give a better idea of what is going on through the discussion. In this short film, I have found a few location to make the story line go smooth, but most of the scenes that I toke places are in the school area as my crew and I are all boarders. So, some of the scenes will be shown in the screenshot with the discussion below.

The images below are the storyboard that we planned before we moved on to the filming process:

We followed the timeline in our storyboard planning, and we tried to show it in the video as the same as possible compared with the drawings that we have, they reflect the images in our first mind. In my opinion, I think that it was quite successful even though we didn't film the scenes in the bar (bottom side of image 4). We also bring our script and storyboard with us when we have to move on to a new location and film the scene that we decided to film on that day. The images below explain well how do the stories goes through the process.

The screenshots above are the scenes that I took place in school, it includes the main entrance, beside Astro, sixth form common room, Wesley boarding house, and chapel. The story is basically telling that Gladys was going to leave and she wrote a letter to Marco. She put the letter at the entrance of his house door. Marco was sad after she left and he didn't know where to find her until the day his friend Bosco found her status with a photo on Instagram. At the same time, Marco got a business trip with the same location as her, then he went to find her.

These screenshots above are the scenes that I took outside the school, including the park next to the Canterbury town bus station, Canterbury town, and Canterbury west train station. For the park, I filmed the scenes of their memories and the time capsule was hide at the end. Marco was trying to find Gladys in the Canterbury town as he knew that she was near that area. He asked people there have they seen her before, however they met and Gladys tried to leave him again.

There are also some scenes that we didn't film such as the bar and business room scene. For the bar scene, I find out that both of the cast are not over 18 yet, and the bars didn't let us do our filming inside the bar, we decided to give up this scene. For the business room part, we did some filming for that scene actually, but we find out the quality and pictures are not same as our mind then we also decided to not use them to link our short film. At the end, it doesn't cause a big issue, because the storyline is not linking together. This can be shown in the survey, one of my questions is asking the audiences are they understand the storyline of the short film.

P3(a) Logging Rushes and Creating Edit Decision List

Meaning & Purpose: In this area, I am going to talk about my editing timeline in Premiere Pro CS5, the software that I used for my video editing, by explaining in detail with screenshots. The screenshots should be able to show my working process, the way that I began my editing and organize my footages.

Aspect ratio film, the image above shows the television or screen aspect ratio, such as 4:3, 16:9, and 21:9. Most of the television and computer monitor and using an aspect ratio of 16:9 currently, which offers a perfect fit for high definition television shows. The aspect ratio of 4:3 normally appears on some old television because the old televisions are square size. In addition, 21:9 of aspect ratio is always being used in video editing. Therefore, I have to choose the right one when I was setting up the Adobe Premiere Pro document for the final music video because it is not able to change the aspect ratio inside the software after I have made the document.

After finish filming our materials for my music video advert editing, I have to watch all of them again and organize the footages well by naming the folders in scene and name in order to make them become more neatly. I also deleted the ones which don't have the quality as good as I want. I separated them into different scenes by using my script planning. It is vital to name these materials because it helps me to use less time to look for the footage that I want to use during the video editing in Premiere Pro CS5.

As I following these steps to create a video edit file in Premiere Pro CS5. Firstly, I have to click 'New Project' to create which is obvious as the button is there. Then, I have to select the place that I am going to save my editing at and make the folder name. Personally, I set it as my unit17 folder and named it as 'Starbucks music video advert'. finally, I have to choose the quality and tv size of the video which I set it as 'HDV 1080p24'.
